British Billionaires Pay No Tax

Listening to BBC Radio 4, don’t I always, there was a startling fact, that Britain’s 54 billionaires paid just £17 million in tax on their £126 billion of assets. Which OK isn’t exactly no tax but is barley 0.01% of their combined wealth. I’d feel pretty rich myself if I could pay tax at that rate, although the country would have gone to rack and ruin. I have to admit that I was unable to confirm these figures but an a Sunday Times article in December 2006 reported this regarding Britain’s 54 billionaires

According to accountancy firm Grant Thornton, the UK billionaires paid income tax totalling just £14.7m on their £126 billion combined fortunes, and only a handful paid any capital gains tax.

So isn’t it about time the rich paid their way?
