Good news if you drive to Swindon.
Swindon local council has voted in favour of ending funding for maintenance of speed cameras in the town.
At a vote last night the Tory council voted unanimously to stop providing £320,000 in funding for the Wiltshire and Swindon Safety Camera Partnership. The council will redirect funding to other road safety projects to reduce deaths on Swindon’s roads.
Police will still be using mobile speed cameras – it’s only fixed cameras which will disappear. Source: The Register.
However, probably not so good news if you’re a pedestrian – we all dislike speed cameras, but if used correctly they significantly improve road safety. Not really good news at all – I’d have liked to have seen cameras placed at accident black spots – currently cameras seem to be placed to maximise profit.
