Harman to Scrap Provocation

Minister for Equalities Harriet Harman vowed the government would press ahead with its plans to scrap the ancient defence of provocation, controversially used by husbands who kill their wives to claim they were provoked by their partner’s infidelity or nagging, despite the misgivings expressed by the Senior Law Lord last week. Ministers argue the change is necessary to send a message that domestic violence is not tolerated within the law and wives are not chattels to be controlled by their spouses.

‘This defence is our own version of honour killings and we are going to outlaw it,’ Harman told The Observer. ‘We have had the discussion, we have had the debate, and we have decided and are not going to bow to judicial protests. When we have changed the law, we are confident the judiciary will implement it. I am determined that women should understand that we won’t brook any excuses for domestic violence.’ Source: The Observer.

Harman’s absolutely spot on since why on earth should the law defend a man who kills his cheating or nagging wife.

Why Have Italians Elected This Idiot

During a press conference with Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, speaking through interpreters said Obama is young, handsome and also tanned, so he has all the qualities to agree with you.

Responding to a reporter’s suggestion that the remark might be misunderstood, he accused his opponents of not having a sense of humour.

”God save us from imbeciles,” he added. Source: BBC.

Indeed somebody save us from one imbecile in particular, namely Silvio Berlusconi.

Well, Knock Me Down With a Feather!

Even whilst the by-election count in Glenrothes was under way the BBC was still predicting a win of around a thousand for the SNP, I didn’t think anything more of the result, expecting gloomy forecasts for Labour in the morning.

However, I wake up the next morning to find dead men walk, Labour’s Lindsay Roy has pulled off a stunning victory to hold on to Glenrothes with a very respectable majority.

Lindsay Roy, Labour – 19,946
Peter Grant, SNP – 13,209
Maurice Golden, Conservative – 1,381
Harry Wills, Lib Dem – 947
Jim Parker, SSCUP – 296
Morag Balfour, Scottish Socialist Party – 212
Kris Seunarine, UKIP – 117
Louise McLeary, Solidarity – 87

Labour majority: 6,737 with a 4.96% swing from Labour to the SNP

Turnout: 52.34%

Crumbs! 1.5%

The Bank of England has cut interest rates in the UK by one-and-a-half percentage points to 3%; it’s lowest since 1955, in a shock move. Source: BBC.

Wow that’s the lowest since January 1955 when the rate was raised to 3.5%. Only a week ago I was predicting rates down to 2.5%, but after an almost unprecedented cut of 1.5% – I’m not so sure – I don’t think we seen an interest drop of that magnitude since March 1981 when it dropped 2% from 14% to 12% (those where the days – real interest rates). So which way now? I see one more percentage point to 2% and that’ll be the lowest since the Second World War, any lower than that and, well, I must be in Japan (UK rates have never been lower than 2% – well not since 1694 at least).

There are Some Nutters Out There

I don’t expect the Right-Wing to be happy about Obama’s victory, but this from Melanie Phillips for The Spectator reads in my mind like a latter day version of Enoch Powell‘s notorious “Rivers of Blood“.

So the answer to my question turned out to be yes, America really was going to do this. A historic moment indeed. The hyperbole for once is not exaggerated: this is a watershed election which changes the fate of the world. The fear however is that the world now becomes very much less safe for all of us as a result. Those of us who have looked on appalled during this most frightening of presidential elections – at the suspension of reason and its replacement by thuggery — can only hope that the way this man governs will be very different from the profile provided by his influences, associations and record to date. It’s a faint hope – the enemies of America, freedom and the west will certainly be rejoicing today.

What?!? The world less safe? Is that possible? Bush has been ignoring global warming at the behest of his paymasters the Oil Companies for eight long years – let alone a bloody war fought over that very same oil. Then Phillips moves on to the ugly question of race – as far as such views are tolerated here in the UK which is thankfully not very far.

What this election tells us is that America voted for change because America is in the process of changing – not just demographically by becoming less white and more diverse, but as the result of a culture war in which western civilisation is losing out to a far-left agenda which has become mainstream, teaching American children to despise the founding values of their country and hijacking discourse by the minority power-grab of victim-culture.

Culture war that the West is losing – I’d suggest Phillips takes a look around – I’d consider the problems of Western culture much more to do with, appealing to the lowest common denominator than any far-left agenda. And then

Millions of Americans remain lion-hearted, decent, rational and sturdy. They find themselves today abandoned, horrified, deeply apprehensive for the future of their country and the free world. No longer the land of the free and the home of the brave; they must now look elsewhere.

Abandoned, horrified, apprehensive – surely we’re talking about Bush – no of course we’re talking about Obama.

Finally, Phillips takes Obama to task over links with the Nation of Islam, I’m guessing there really isn’t much in this story otherwise surely McCain would have used this; or is her man above that? And, not to miss a swipe at the Labour government – Gordon Brown’s securement from the Saudis of more money for The International Monetary Fund is “the Islamisation of the west proceeding according to plan“. If my memory serves me right haven’t we always loved Saudi money, I seem to remember the Thatcher government being very keen on Saudi money for weapons, yes, you remember too – still according to Phillips.

Gordon Brown and Peter Mandelson are delivering Britain and the west into Dhimmitude.

Dhimmitude is an attitude of concession, surrender and appeasement towards Islamic demands – and looking at how we treat the Saudis, that’s been going on for decades; still let’s not let facts get in the way of a stories punch line.

This is supposedly serious journalism! I must stop looking into the sewer that is the Tory Press.

Don’t Vote Tory if You Rely on Tips

The Conservatives tried to alter the Employment Bill to make it easier for bosses to deny staff extra money.

The Daily Mirror has successfully campaigned to stop greedy owners using tips and gratuities to top up the minimum wage.

As a result of the “Fair Tips” campaign ministers are to bring in new rules which will guarantee catering staff get a fair deal.

But an amendment tabled by the Tories would have stopped agency workers from benefiting from the changes.

The Conservative proposals would also only apply to cash left by customers on the table, meaning bosses could still use pooled tips and service charges to top up salaries. Source: The Daily Mirror.

Then and Now

David Cameron then on John McCain

“Senator John McCain did my party the great honour of addressing our annual conference two years ago, and we saw then the courage and conviction that saw him go to Michigan and tell the voters directly that the old jobs weren’t coming back and that protectionism was no answer to today’s economic problems”. Source: The Daily Telegraph.

And now on Barack Obama

“In electing Barack Obama, America has made history and proved to the world that it is a nation eager for change. This has been an exciting and inspirational contest with two great candidates. In these difficult times people everywhere are crying out for change. Barack Obama is the first of a new generation of leaders who will deliver it – he has my whole-hearted congratulations.” Source: The Conservative Party.

Cameron – man facing both ways.

Don’t Get Carried Away

I’m not one to piss on a party – ok I am; I’ve been unable to contain myself. Don’t get me wrong I certainly preferred Obama to McCain. And Obama has not only secured the Presidency but also tightened the Democrats grip on both the Senate and The House of Representatives in what can only be described as a historic victory.

Like Tony Blair back in 1997 Obama sits on majorities with which he can do almost what he will, I’d like to think unlike Blair he’ll be a little more radical – however rumblings from the press point otherwise here & here. Like Blair it looks like 10-years of wasted opportunities.

Grow Your own Oil!

Well not quite – well OK – not even quite – but one day.

Dr. Gary A. Strobel of Montana State University has discovered a fungus, Gliocladium rosem, which produces diesel fuel – dubbed “myco-diesel”.

A tree fungus could provide green fuel that can be pumped directly into tanks, scientists say. The organism, found in the Patagonian rainforest, naturally produces a mixture of chemicals that is remarkably similar to diesel.

“This is the only organism that has ever been shown to produce such an important combination of fuel substances,” said Gary Strobel, a plant scientist from Montana State University who led the work. “We were totally surprised to learn that it was making a plethora of hydrocarbons.”

Many simple organisms, such as algae, are already known to make chemicals that are similar to the long-chain hydrocarbons present in transport fuel but, according to Strobel, none produce the explosive hydrocarbons with the high energy density of those in myco-diesel. Strobel said that the chemical mixture produced by his fungus could be used in a modern diesel engine without any modification.

Another advantage of the G. roseum fungus is its ability to eat up cellulose. This is a compound that, along with lignin, makes up the cell walls in plants and is indigestible by most animals. As such, it makes up much of the organic waste currently discarded, such as stalks and sawdust. Source: Balloon Juice.

See, it’s possible; we could grow our own oil.

I Have A Dream

President elect Barack Obama and Family

President elect Barack Obama and Family

It was just over 50 years ago when Martin Luther King, Jr. led the
Montgomery Bus Boycott against the city’s policy of racial segregation on its public transit system and just 45 years since King gave what is now know as his “I Have a Dream” speech on 28th August 1963 from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. Which makes Barak Obama’s victory in the Presidential election extraordinary – I cast doubt on the US public’s ability to elect a black candidate – I’m so happy to be wrong.
